Must See and Read – Brian Brake’s ‘Lens On The World’

Posted on 12 Jun 2011 | by Ben | Filed under Blog

Brian Brake was arguably New Zealand’s most famous and most internationally successful photographers. His life’s work has now been collected into a must read book and must see exhibition, both titled Lens On The World.

His most famous work was in China 1957 & 1959 as well as his Monsoon series in India during the wet season in 1960. Taken in an age where only a few had cameras and when the world was far less explored, I can’t help but be drawn into his ‘eye on the wall’ style and sense of discovery his images portray.

The 352 page book chronicles Brake’s life and work in five distinct periods. It’s a stunning book and I have spent may hours pouring over his work, observing technique and his style. It’s a must have for any photographer.

The Lens On The World exhibition is currently in Auckland until August and then tours the rest of the country. The full schedule is here. You can pick up a copy of the Lens On The World Book at Mighty Ape.
