Photo Essay: Cycling the Mountain to Sea Trail

Posted on 27 Dec 2010 | by Ben | Filed under Blog

The Mountain to Sea Trail is one of the Great Rides on the New Zealand National Cycleway. It will eventually be a 245km trail from Ohakune at the base of Mt Ruapehu all the way to the Tasman Sea at Whanganui. But at the moment there are two sections open, the Old Coach Rd and the Raetihi to Mangapurua Landing sections.

A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to ride a lot of these two tracks. It is going to be a spectacular ride once fully completed, but even right now it is stunning. I love the unrideable section from Pipiriki to The Bridge to Nowhere which means the only way in or out is via boat.

The remote, raw and rugged beauty of this area is hard to explain. Maybe my photos will help.
