Hi Ben, great pics! I saw them on Cohabitaire.com. I’m interested to know what gear you were using for these shots and the pic specs eg iso, aperture, shutter speed etc, if you don’t mind? I’m travelling at the moment but looking to really get into my photography when i get home. Once again, love the pics. Cheers

Hey Doug, thanks for your feedback. Appreciate it.

I shot the vast majority on a Nikon D70s – it’s about 5 years old but still does a great job. About to upgrade though. All were shot with my Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens. I always shoot at the lowest ISO possible, which on my Nikon is ISO 200. This is so the quality of the image is at its highest. Often means I need to use a tripod in low light situations.

I always shoot in RAW format as well to record the maximum detail possible. Means you need to convert in post production but you have so much more flexibility.

With regards to shutter speed and aperture, it really depends on the image – a typical wide shot of a landscape, I shoot around f13 and above. For an image with more detail or a portrait I’d typically shoot around f8 and below. I usually decide on my aperture first then set the corresponding shutter speed. Any speed below 1/60th of a second and I will use a tripod to avoid camera shake.

Have you read any of my tutorials in my blog? http://www.bencrawford.co.nz/blog May help a bit? Definitely shoot in Manual mode as you will have so much more control.

No sure if this will help at all? Feel free to ask as many questions as you like and I’d be happy to help you improve your photography.
